When Lee Kuan Yew, the late Singaporean statesman, was asked what he thought about the wisdom of giving an expanded international role to the Japanese armed forces, he compared it to “giving a chocolate liqueur to an alcoholic”.

“Once the Japanese get off the wagon,” he said, “it will be hard to stop them.”
