More than two dozen NATO troops were injured in clashes with Serb protesters in Kosovo this week, leading NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg to announce the deployment of 700 additional troops to keep the peace in a region with a fraught history of ethnic conflict.
The NATO troops were protecting town halls where ethnic Albanian mayors in Serb-majority areas of northern Kosovo took office. Serbia, neighboring Kosovo's north and east, has put its armed forces on high alert.
