Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, is said to be ‘giving serious thought’ to establishing a new social network powered by crypto.

  • Elon Musk has announced that he is giving ‘serious thought’ to creating a new social network. He put the idea out on Twitter, his current social network-of-choice.
  • Musk made the suggestion after conducting a poll, asking his followers whether they believe Twitter “rigorously adheres” to the principle that “free speech is essential to a functioning democracy”.
  • Of the 2 million users that took part in the poll, 70% voted “no”. This in turn prompted the discussion around Musk’s creation of a new network, where free speech ideals would be upheld.
  • Musk would not be the first major public figure to launch their own social media platform. Donald Trump created the social media platform “Truth” after being banned from Twitter last year.
  • However, some concerns have already been raised. Musk has been described as a “free speech absolutist” until it comes to silencing his own critics.
  • Reports of Tesla employees being fired after speaking out against company issues are not isolated. Should the richest man in the world be allowed to gain even more power?
