After buying the largest individual stake in Twitter, Elon Musk has declined from accepting a position on its board. What’s his endgame?

  • Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk is known to be a prolific user of Twitter. Last week when news emerged that he bought a 9.2% stake in Twitter, it shocked and delighted many equally.
  • Just a few days before this news, Musk had called out Twitter for stifling free speech. He also tweeted that he was giving ‘serious thought’ to building an alternative to Twitter.
  • Over last week, Musk sent out a series of tweets criticizing the platform, doing polls around the ‘Edit’ button and even suggested turning Twitter’s San Francisco office into a homeless shelter.
  • Musk who calls himself a ‘free speech absolutist’ is not too keen to hear differing opinions when it comes to operations at his electric car company Tesla, documented in many books.
  • There have been many instances in the past when Musk has landed himself in a soup for his tweets. The most notorious being when he announced that he was taking Tesla private at $420 per share.
  • Analysts warn that Musk’s move to buy a large stake in Twitter should not be considered as yet another trolling attempt. Twitter employees have already expressed concerns regarding Musk.
