US Iran nuclear talks are back on the table and things are not going to be as easy this time.

  • Iran insisted that its nuclear program is meant for peaceful purposes. But the US, EU and the UN believed that Iran was also developing nuclear weapons, leading to sanctions on Iran since 2010.
  • Two sites, Natanz and Fordo, were initially hidden from international eyes which gave rise to speculations of Iran developing nuclear weapons there.
  • In 2015, UK, US, China, Russia, France and Germany brokered a deal with Iran called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) to lift sanctions as long as Iran limited its nuclear activities.
  • Former US President Donald Trump signed out of the Iran nuclear deal in 2018, calling it flawed. Iran responded by increasing uranium enrichment and other nuclear activities.
  • Current US President, Joe Biden, wants to re-enter the deal. While the US wants Iran to follow all obligations from JCPOA, Iran wants the US to make the first move by lifting sanctions.
  • This week Iran is back to the negotiating table in Austria, but things aren’t as black and white as one would expect. Read on to know more.
