  • Hungary has elected the country’s first ever female President, Katalin Novák. The 44-year-old, who is an Orbán loyalist, received two-thirds of the parliamentary vote.
  • Protests have erupted in Iraq’s southern region as a result of rising food prices. More than 500 protesters gathered on Wednesday in a central square in the southern city of Nasiriya.
  • A study has shown that the Amazon rainforest has reached a tipping point. The “lungs of the earth” has undergone such extensive damage, it is no longer able to regenerate as it once was.
  • The director of Black Panther, one of the most successful films in history, was mistaken for a bank robber and handcuffed after asking the bank teller to discreetly withdraw $12,000.
  • Scientists and environmentalists have warned that the world has a “once in a lifetime” opportunity to protect the oceans. Negotiations began this week at the UN to devise a new ocean treaty.
